Book Review // Romancing The Duke by Tessa Dare

Synopsis:

Isolde Ophelia Goodnight has spent her life in the shadow of her father’s stories The Goodnight Tales. Countless fans and admirers love Izzy for the story that her life was centered around but all Izzy has wanted her entire life has been someone to love and care for; someone that will give her the kiss worth of being swept off her feet with passion.

Ransom is the Duke of Rothbury that has been rumored to have been dead after a brief altercation left him blinded and housebound. All Ransom wants is to be left alone and to live out the rest of his days in the decaying castle with his few servants and his loyal dog Magnus.

When Izzy’s father dies and she receives a letter to go to Gostley Castle, she has no choice but to scrape together her meager personal belongings including her weasel Snowdrop and make the trip. Upon arrival Ransom and Izzy fall into a situation as ridiculous and fantastical as the stories she grew up around.

In the first installment of The Castles Ever After Series, Tessa Dare will take you on a whimsical slow-burn adventure where two unlikely people are thrown together to save the place they both call home.

My Thoughts:

This was quite the adventure! We follow Izzy Goodnight who was left impoverished after her father’s passing and follows instructions from a letter to what seems to be an abandoned castle. When she first arrives at the castle she meets Ransom, The Duke that owns the property and she faints from not having eaten properly in days. After the two finally meet we learn that Ransom is completely blind except for the random moments in good light where he can make out shapes. It was great to see that disability rep in this book and it was done very well, Magnus was Ransom’s Support Animal and Ransom himself was very capable.

When Izzy finds out that she’s inherited this castle her and Ransom immediately tell each other that they aren’t leaving. Instead of letting each other share Ransom tries to prank Izzy out of the castle while Izzy tries to make the castle livable for humans and not just for the bats, rats, and other critters that have taken up residence. The battle between who will end up owning the castle in the end remains a mystery because neither back down throughout the book.

This was such a slow burn between the two characters that it gave the reader time to really get to know both of them as people. Izzy was sassy, headstrong, not willing to settle for less than what SHE wanted and determined to make things work no matter the obstacle. Ransom was used to being discarded and unloved so when he was first introduced to someone as caring as Izzy he reciprocated with crude behavior to try and scare her off but it had the opposite effect and made Izzy want him more. It took until towards the end for him to realize what an idiot he was being and to stop letting himself live the rest of his days alone just because it was what he was used to. These two were definitely passionate and there were plenty of dramatic declarations of love to be had throughout the pages, it was so cheesy but I have to admit that I loved it.

I liked how dedicated Izzy’s admirers were and how they all rallied to support her, I do wish that the friendship between Abigail and Izzy was more fleshed out because a lot of the connections they made were while they were remodeling the castle. There were a ton of mishaps that happened that were very true to the plot line and kept the story interesting enough and the fun nature of the story kept it from being too serious, which also made it enjoyable for me as well. I can’t forget to mention that little plot twist! As far as her books go I would still have to say that The Girl Meets Duke series still has my favorite characters but I still have a couple more books to go in this particular series so I hope I haven’t spoken too soon!

Wrap-Up:

I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series and meeting the other characters but overall I rated this story 3.5/5 Stars.
