Release Date 01.21.2019

Synopsis:

In this dark yet magical poetry collection in 5 parts Godin takes you on a journey of finding strength in the dark. Within it’s pages you’ll find a tale of anger, power, acceptance and resistance of the spirit, body and mind. Sometimes the darkest monsters dwell within and the only way to combat them is to dig deep into the parts of you that you wish you could hide.

I received this DRC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review and this in no way sways my opinion about the novel.

My Thoughts:

I would just like to first start off by saying that this is a unique blend of fantasy, mythology, fairytale and connection to real life; This book may be short but I know I’m going to be thinking about it for a while and I wish it was longer. I found myself swiping at the end for the next page but there was none, I wanted more.

“They tell me I’m more witchcraft than girl.

More wolf than woman.”

“Like it’s a bad thing to be the predator and not the prey.”

It’s a collection split into 5 separate parts and each part is true to the description and the poems that are within those parts. The author takes you on a journey of life within her body and the journey she went on to love it even if it may be broken, not enough at times. This was a fantastic #OwnVoices book with Disabled Representation and the whirlpool of emotions that come with having a spirit bigger than the life you may be confined to but finding the independence and love even though it’s easy to succumb to the darkness.

“And how many ghosts can she harbor, before she turns into one herself?”

“Then you realize that the pain was never really gone. Just that you hadn’t buried it deep enough.”

“We may be good at burying things. But we aren’t grave diggers.”

More than once during this novel I found myself saying “wow” or just humbled by the vulnerability of Kala’s voice and experience. I need everyone to go read this.

“I’m here to tell you that the Captain doesn’t have to sink with the ship.”

“You are not drowning, you are only learning how to swim, and I promise you can do it.”

Wrap up:

Kala is a member of my bookclub The Lit Coven and I didn’t want to mention this until the end so no one felt that the review was not authentic. I am in love with how she blended magic and real life, it somehow made the read more…surreal yet real and I know that makes no sense. I’m just left with a feeling of introspection and wisdom, I look forward to supporting her on every future endeavor. This book was rated 4.5/5 🌟 and was every bit as magical as Kala herself.
