My thoughts:

I was immediately hooked by the cover of this book upon seeing it and I HAD to read it. The Little Mermaid was one of my favorite Disney movies growing up so this was and is everything that I needed and more. Let me start off by saying that it is extremely historically accurate to the setting of the Hans Christian Andersen tale which was a major bonus for me. There was an easy flow to this story with plenty of Danish language and tradition which made for an interesting read. This isn’t a book that is a show stopper but it’s one that I could re-read over and over again and that plot twist was well executed. It’s only told from the POV of Evie so we get to experience everything firsthand as well as going back to four years in the past when her friend drowns. I didn’t know how this story was going to go since it was very unique but the ending had me applauding the overall story. I am very pleased with this tale and I definitely recommend it, it was one of the more original retellings I’ve read. It takes place over the course of Lithasblot a festival honoring Urda (their sea goddess), so we get to see what a seafaring town like Havnestad would be like during one of their longest and largest celebrations. It was just a really magical story.

Characters:

I’ll forever be the fisherman’s daughter, caught in a web of whispers and lies spread by those too scared to open their eyes and see beyond what’s in front of their faces.”

Evelyn: I found myself drawn to Evie because of her ability to find compassion when she was never shown any, from the beginning she has a rough time but never once does she lay down and take it. The townspeople have always had a problem with her ties to the crown prince Niklas especially with her status as poor and a possible witch. Her father is a fisherman, her Tante Hansa is “The Healer of Kings” and she is trying to get by unscathed. I would say that at the end of it she learns to trust herself and her magic more but not without some betrayal involved.

“”Mermaids are not the monsters you humans think we are. I could not just let him drown”

Annemette: This character is mysterious, powerful and beautiful. Essentially everything a mermaid should be. I won’t say much about her character because I don’t want to reveal too much of the plot so just keep an eye on her development throughout the book! The end of this book will have you questioning everything you thought you knew about the animated mermaid from the Disney movie.

“That little Witch will be the death of you if you’re not careful”

Niklas: The complete embodiment of a prince, manners, strength, charisma and skill. I love his heart and his character and how he never abused his power. His undying loyalty to Evie and his people made my heart warm, he exemplifies bravery and regality. 10 points for Prince Nik. He’s a little too trusting but try and dislike his character I dare you. I think he really captured the spirit of Prince Eric.

“Iker makes his own rules, but he never breaks his word”

Iker: He’s the cousin of Nik and a playboy in his own right. He is the epitome of what an heir to a Viking throne should be, and he has the tenacity to match. This is one guy that you want to keep your eyes on…for multiple reasons. I wasn’t really warm to his character because he’s made off as a playboy from the beginning and he’s just a little too off with his behavior which I won’t go into detail about because I want everyone to have an organic experience.

Wrap-Up:

I won’t hold you here long but if you’re a lover of fantasy or YA read this one! I can’t wait to see what other adventures this author spins, I loved the historical accuracy and I know that plenty of hard work and tears went into this book so I just want to praise her. I gave this book 4/5 🐚

Just a boy, a girl, and the sea.”
