Mid Year Review!

Wow, I can’t believe it’s already July, to say this year is flying by would be an understatement. Let’s get to the good stuff shall we?

My top 5 books so far:

I was going to list my top 3 but after going through the books I read I had to narrow it down to these beauties! (In no particular order because they’re all super wonderful)

  • The Illuminae Files Trilogy by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – This Trilogy honestly revived my love for sci-fi adventures 100x over. If you’re a lover of action, science, and teenagers giving adults a run for their money then this is one for you. Each book is written with a culmination of written video feeds, emails, pictures and other forms of correspondence so it makes for a super interactive and fun read. If you can get past the fact that Kaufman & Kristoff teamed up to ruin your day a couple hundred times then you’ll fall in love just as much as I did. I’ve recommended this to every book lover and gushed about this to my fellow book club ladies! (Shoutout to @TheLitCoven I love you 💘) The first book in the series is aptly named Illuminae and the link above goes straight to Goodreads! 💫
  • The Brooklyn Brujas Trilogy by Zoraida Córdova- (the third installment isn’t out yet) it has been a long time since I read a book about witches that made me remember why I loved magic in the first place. Each book is about The Mortiz sisters and their journeys and mishaps with growing into their powers. The first book is great but the second book is even better, hold onto your seats because I’m sure the third one is going to be even more exciting. The first one is called Labyrinth Lost and the link above leads straight to the Goodreads synopsis. 🥀
The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton– Let me tell you that I had no idea what this was going to be about but it completely changed the way I thought about writing. Clayton writes in a way that you can smell and taste the scenery. It’s a beautiful book with a dark twist and when the second installment comes out I. AM. BUYING. IT. It reminds me of a book centered around district one from The Hunger Games but without all the kids being killed. This is about Camellia Beauregard and her life and trials to become the best Belle that Orléans has ever seen, but nothing is what she came to expect. Prepare for a beautiful journey with this one. Follow the link 🌸
The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo- Y’ALL. I devoured this book in one sitting at 2am because it was that good. It’s written in prose from the POV of Xiomara Batista growing up in a devout catholic household and discovering who she is. This one had me near tears at times it’s raw, captivating and refreshing. I don’t care who you are everyone deserves this in their lives!!! 100 million stars I say!!!🌟🌟🌟 🌟 If you don’t click this link consider my feelings hurt.
An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir- I just finished a review of this! I loved it and it’s unique premise, not to mention the fact that my heart was over 100bpm like the entire time. All of my thoughts on it can be found in my spoiler free review. This is centered around Elias Veturius (BlackCliff’s deadliest soldier) and Laia (book loving scholar girl). I will say no more because you have to experience this one for yourself. Do I even have to tell you to click the link? ⚔️

Now for the hard part…

Okay so obviously I’m not the only one that feels a hole of despair and guilt when they have high expectations for a book and then it doesn’t quite hit the spot. Here’s one of the books that I didn’t finish but I think others might love.

  • Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake- When I tell you guys I tried to get through this I really mean it, I read about 175 pages before I gave up and I mean gave up. It just seemed rather repetitive every chapter, not to mention that there were 3 POV’s and supporting characters for each (Kudos on the intricacy Blake!) Maybe one day I’ll finish because I heard the last part of the book is crazy but today is not that day! Check it out for yourself.

  • The upcoming release that I would trade a firstborn for (I’m kidding, but not really)

    • Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas- the final installment in the Throne of Glass series. If you haven’t heard of Aelin Galythinius do you even read bro?? Here I’ll save you the time and send you the link straight to the first book. If you loved A Court of Thorns and Roses then you’ll rip through The Throne of Glass series here’s book one

A read that left me wanting more

    • The Starbound Trilogy by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner- I gotta be honest I started reading these books almost straight after Obsidio (the final installment in the Illuminae Files) and I was CRAVING more Kaufman, like if she had written a single sentence with anyone else you bet your ass I would have paid money for it. After reading this trilogy I want her to take my money and take it right now. Like The Illuminae Files each book is written from the POV of different characters, the first book These Broken Stars features Tarver Merendsen & Lilac LaRoux. If there ever were a couple I could read about over and over and over again it would be them. The story starts out on board the Icarus a ship that can hold 50,000 people when suddenly it’s ripped from hyperspace. Lilac and Tarver are the only ones that survive and from that point on all hell broke loose. I found myself wanting more 120 pages in and I received it ladies and gents. I’m not saying that you’ll love it as much as I will but this is one that I fantasize about and I’m not even embarrassed to say. Go ahead and check it out loves 🚀
