An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

“Izzat means many things. Strength, honor, pride. But in the past century, it’s come to mean something specific: Freedom”

Synopsis: In a land torn apart by violence a meek Scholar girl named Laia becomes caught in the middle of a martial raid when her brother is accused of crimes against the Martial Empire ands suddenly finds herself inside the deadly Blackcliff Academy spying for the Resistance to save him.

Elias Veturius is the best soldier that Blackcliff has seen next to his longtime partner Helene Aquilla. But he doesn’t revel in the blood and abuse that his people and fellow classmates must endure just to reign superior. Planning on deserting after graduation to finally be free of his Mask status Elias is dealt a hand that could change his entire future forever.

This book written from the POV of Elias and Laia spins a heart racing tale of courage in the face of danger and the evil that threatens to consume them both. The two must do things they’ve never done before to secure their freedoms because to fail means certain death.

My Thoughts:

Do you ever hear about a book and have absolutely no idea what to expect but you read the first page and you’re like “awwww shit here we go” ??? That was completely me.

Laia: Two words. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. At the beginning of the book she emphasizes on how she’s not as strong as her brother or anyone else in her family and by the end of it she’s scaling buildings and finding her strength. Her chapters tore me up because I never knew what was going to happen to her I was STRESSED honey.

Elias: Hello new number one book crush😍 (sorry Rhysand) I just wanted to reach out and hold him the whole book because his internal struggle could quite literally mean the death of every person he holds dear and not to mention his mother is a whole mess within herself. His strength and bad ass soldier exterior coupled with his soft heart and gray eyes SWOON CITY POPULATION: Me, Myself & I.

Villains: As far as antagonists go The Commandant scared the crap out of me, like that is not a woman you want to mess with and her status as headmaster of BlackCliff Academy wasn’t earned the easy or the clean way. This is an antagonist that would haunt people if she was alive and I’m glad she’s a character but there are still a few more books for her to completely ruin my life. The idea of the Masks is scary but then you add in the Scims (weapons used by Martials) and I would never want to meet one of them even if I had the training. These guys go through hell to become Masks so it’s only fitting that they become Hell itself.

I wanted to write this spoiler free because everyone deserves to experience a book like this for themselves. So what are you waiting for? Go read it like right now.
